Stevenson High School Boys Golf Team—North Suburban Conference

Stevenson golf team is limited to a small number of individuals—approx. 8-12 on Varsity, 7-8 on Junior Varsity-Sophomore, and 7-8 on the Freshmen team. This limited number is contrary to Stevenson's philosophy, but is determined by other factors:

  • The number of players allowed by the ISHA for each match.
  • The number of players allowed by the North Suburban Conference.
  • The limited number of tee times granted to the team at local courses.
  • The limited practice spaces granted to the team by local driving ranges.

Consequently, the golf team at Stevenson is very small when compared to other sports, however, this situation is not unique to Stevenson, but to schools throughout the state.

Therefore, making the team is determined by many variables. When making the cuts, coaches strongly consider the following:

  • Score
  • Behavior/Attitude
  • Etiquette toward coaches, teammates and opponents
  • Proper treatment of the golf facilities and personnel
  • Punctuality and attendance
  • Communication with coaches
  • Dress
  • Conforming to the Stevenson Athletic Code

Explaining in greater detail, golfers trying out for the team should use proper golf etiquette at all times, play by the USGA rules, and dress with a collared shirt, knee length shorts or nice pants (no jeans).

In addition, if a Freshman and a Sophomore shoot the same score, a Freshman may be more valuable to the team because they have an additional year to develop their skills necessary to contribute to the program in the future. This philosophy hold true throughout the years in school.

Also, an individual with a higher score may be more desirable than a golfer with a slightly lower score, because of the superior attitude, work ethic, behavior and desire.
